Are Metal Model Ships a Good Choice?

There are many people who delights in building model cars, planes and boats from kits. When it comes to model ships, you can find all kinds of great kits available these days. There are Viking ships, historic ships, ancient ships, sailboats, yachts, warships and more from which you can choose. Most kits are made from one of three materials -- wood, plastic or metal. Wood model ships are the most traditional, while plastic models are the most common. Metal model ships are harder to find in kit form, but can be located in specialty shops or even online. Sometimes, you can even find great kits on Ebay.

Most metal kits are made from a type of sheet metal. Sometimes, the pieces need to be painted, other times, they come already painted. Depending on the kit you choose, the paint and brushes may come included. Another thing that you'll need that may come in your kit is glue suitable for metal. Model glue is usually quite toxic and gives off bad fumes so always open the windows in the room where you're using the glue to provide ventilation and fresh air, and run an exhaust fan to encourage air circulation if you have one. You might also want safety glasses, gloves to protect your skin from glue and paint, and tweezers to help you grasp and place small parts.

On your search for a ship building kit made of metal, you might come across models that have already been constructed by expert builders. These models are often sought after and purchased by collectors. They look distinguished in a glass curio or adorning a gentleman's office or study. Many people have a room or more than one in their home that has a distinctly oceanic or nautical theme, where a model ship would be right at home as an accent piece. You may want to sell your completed models, or you may want to display them in your own home.

Metal model ships may be hard to find, but are often preferable to plastic or wood depending on the type of ship you're building. For example, a military battleship or yacht would be perfect in metal as the material would add to the realism. A Viking or ancient Roman ship, on the other hand, would be more appropriate when crafted from wood. Use your judgement to decide what material is best for your model building goals, needs and preferences.
